After the fall: the lessons of an indulgent era

|Abstract||Online learning, like so many other areas of life, has experienced a period of brutal readjustment to reality in the new millennium. High expectations have been dashed, and visionary projects crushed. And yet, there are so many examples of successes that we are compelled to ask why some failed and others thrived. This is a sensitive and explosive topic, but one that we, as participants in the scholarly enterprise, cannot avoid. What worked and what did not? How do issues like reputation, brand, marketing, intellectual property, financing, and joint venturing affect the outcomes? How are these different (or the same) for non-profit successes like UMassOnline and for-profit successes like the University of Phoenix?
