Nominations for the Mildred B. and Charles A. Wedemeyer Award - Outstanding Practitioner in Distance Education

Professor and Mrs. Wedemeyer established this biennial award to recognize outstanding contributions in the application of important skills, concepts, techniques, meanings and understandings of distance education in North America. The award honors leadership that has provided a model of practice benefitting present and future distance education programs, instructors, students, researchers, and practitioners. Contributions may include: distance teaching and learning projects, innovative distance education methods, activities that enhance the field of practice, or a body of work demonstrating exceptional contributions and/or advancements to the field.

Eligibility

This competition is open to all practitioners who reside and practice distance education in North America.

Nomination Requirements

Nominations must include the following:

  • Nomination Data Sheet identifying:
    • Nominator contact information (Name, Job Title, email, postal mail and telephone)
    • Nominator background information (experience in/knowledge of distance education)
    • Nominee contact information (Name, Job Title, email, postal mail and telephone)
    • Nominee biographical sketch (approx. one page)
  • Statement of the case - a detailed letter from the Nominator to the Wedemeyer Award Committee stating why the Nominee is worthy of the Wedemeyer Award for Excellence in Distance Education Practice and addressing the evaluation criteria noted below.
  • Curriculum vita of the Nominee including the basic vita information as well as previous awards, special honors, involvement in distance education committees, task forces, etc.
  • Exhibits that exemplify the Nominee's contributions to distance education
  • Three letters of support for the Nominee from individuals who can attest to the influence of the Nominee's distance education practice and its impact.

Nomination Deadline

All materials must be received by the first Monday in April (even-numbered calendar years).

Evaluation Criteria

Nominees will be evaluated on the following:

  • Contributions to the practice of distance education
  • Pedagogical soundness of programs and practices
  • Ties to extant knowledge and research
  • Ongoing evaluation of programs and practice
  • Efforts to enhance the practice of others
  • Transfer of practice innovations to others
  • Demonstrated benefits in terms of innovative approaches to teaching and learning and communication in distance education
  • Impact of excellence in practice with demonstrated regional, national or international reach
  • Vision of distance education practice in the future
