Technology visionary with a focus on wise applications

As one of the world's leading visionaries on computer and telecommunications technology, Peter Cochrane works on the cutting-edge of digital advances and the implications for how we live, work, and learn. His opening keynote explores the future of technology and education. In provocative and practical terms, he paints a vision of where digital technology is heading, how it is changing education, and why it requires bold, holistic leadership. His keynote goes beyond technology observations to focus on how we can harness technology in wise applications.

Peter Cochrane joined British Telecommunications in 1973 and has worked on a wide range of technologies and systems. In 1993 he became Head of Research, responsible for leading a staff of 660 in envisioning advanced developments in digital technology, artificial intelligence, multimedia, virtual reality, wearable computers, smart agents and their effects on education, training, and telemedicine. In April 1999 he was appointed Chief Technologist, creating a new Communications Consultant Group concerned with charting the long-term future of technology, society, and organizational change on a global scale.

Learning telecommunications from the bottom-up, he started his BT career as a technician, working his way to executive positions while earning a bachelor's, master's, and two doctoral degrees. He has served as a visiting professor and published widely on technology, with more than 330 papers, patents, press articles, and books as well as over 200 radio and TV appearances. His latest book Tips for Time Travelers:Visionary Insights into New Technology, Life and the Future on the Edge of Technology has been heralded as "a primer about living in the future" by MIT Media Lab Director Nicolas Negroponte and a book that "brings clarity and focus to our understanding of ourselves and our technologies."

He currently holds the Collier Chair for the Public Understanding of Science & Technology at the University of Kent and is a member of the Oxford University Advisory Council on Further Education. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and a Member of the New York Academy of Sciences. He is also a member of the TTI Vanguard Advisory Board and a consultant to numerous international companies. Among his many awards are the Queen's Award for Innovation & Export in 1990, the Martlesham Medal for contributions to fibre optic technology in 1994, the IEE Electronics Division Premium in 1986, Computing and Control Premium in 1994, the IERE Benefactors Prize in 1994, and the James Clerk Maxwell Memorial Medal in 1995.

Janet Poley
Janet Poley is widely recognized as a leader in developing collaborative distance education initiatives both nationally and internationally. In 1995 she was named one of the 100 outstanding information technology leaders in government, business, and academia by Federal Computer Week. Dr. Poley became President and CEO of ADEC (formerly AG*SAT) in early 1994, where she is currently involved in implementing a new digital infrastructure with the U.S. Department of Commerce. She is frequently called upon by the National Science Foundation, the World Bank, and other international organizations for educational planning related to Internet and distance education development.

Panelist: Don Foshee
President, Innovative Interactions, Inc., and Project Manager & CIO, Western Governors University

Don Foshee Over the past two decades, Don Foshee has designed, built, and managed some of the largest and most successful distance learning, technology-based training, and telemedicine projects in North America. His projects have included the TI-IN Network, Oregon ED-NET, Native American Network, and STAR Schools networks in several states. He is currently Project Manager and Acting CIO of the Western Governors "Virtual" University, and he is also heading up a team of experts in the planning and implementation of the University of Texas System's virtual "TeleCampus", to be launched next year.. As President and CEO of his own company, Innovative Interactions, Inc., he provides consulting services worldwide.

President & CEO, DigitalThink

Pete Goettner
Pete Goettner, President and CEO, co-founded DigitalThink in 1996. Under his management, DigitalThink has attracted high-profile Venture Capital investment, launched its award winning Web-based training product, landed key customer and partner accounts, and grown to become an industry leader. Pete is frequently a guest lecturer at the Harvard Business School and the Haas School of Business at U.C. Berkeley. He has been featured on NPR's Tech Nation, and can often be heard at Hambrecht & Quist and Solomon Smith Barney investor forums. Pete earned his BS in Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1986 and an MBA from the Haas School of Business at U.C. Berkeley in 1992.

Panelist: Sally Reynolds
Managing Director, ATiT, & Project Manager for the European SAVIE and BIC projects

Sally Reynolds Sally Reynolds has worked extensively in the use of Direct Broadcast Satellite and ISDN-based videoconferencing for education and training applications in multicultural environments. She also has extensive experience in European educational and training networks and has worked in a managerial capacity for a number of European Commission supported projects, including the Multimedia TeleSchool project, the European Open University Network, and the EuroPACE 2000 network. She is currently managing the SAVIE (Support Action to facilitate the use of Videoconferencing in Education) and BIC (Blueprint for Interactive Classrooms) projects on behalf of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. She is also Managing Director of ATiT, an audio-visual and production company.

Panelist: Dr. Robert Threlkeld
Dean, Learning and Technology, California State University-Fresno

Robert Threlkeld Dr. Robert Threlkeld has been Dean of Learning and Technology at California State University, Fresno, since 1995. He has been involved in all aspects of distance and distributed learning for more than fifteen years. In August, 1998, Dr. Threlkeld was asked to co-direct "CalStateTEACH," the Cal State's $5 million partnership with the Open University of the UK to produce open supported learning materials for teacher education. In addition, he is a Senior Associate for the Western Cooperative for Educational Telecommunications. In that role, he is providing advice and leadership in the Management for Distance Education Institutes and Western Cooperative Consulting.
