This seminar focuses on developing learner-centered, interactive strategies for videoconferencing, webconferencing, and blended technologies. It will look at 7 key areas that are critical to consider in using videoconferencing and other distance education technologies, explore the differences between the traditional classroom and teaching at a distance, and focus on developing successful learner-centered formats and strategies with engaging interaction activities. About the Instructors

Dr. Rosemary Lehman is Senior Outreach/Distance Education Specialist at Instructional Communications Systems (ICS), University of Wisconsin-Extension (UWEX) and Manager of the ICS Instructional Design Team. Rosemary holds a BA in English from Lawrence College (University), a Masters in Television/Media Critique, and a Ph.D. in Distance Education/Adult Learning from University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the author of The Essential Videoconferencing Guide: 7 Keys to Success, the editor of Using Distance Education Technology: Effective Practices, and has authored numerous book chapters and journal articles. She has keynoted/presented at a wide variety of statewide, national, and international conferences and is the recipient of the UWEX Award for Excellence in leadership and distance education.

Dr. Lehman's major areas of research emphasis have been in media critique, adult learning, technology/media, cognition/perception, and creating presence. She applies this research in her training and in practical educational applications. Her recent post-doctoral paper, "The Role of Emotion in Creating Instructor and Learner Presence in the Distance Education Experience" was published in the Spring/Summer 2006 issue of the peer-reviewed online Journal of Cognitive Affective Learning (JCAL) www.jcal.emory.edu. A new book co-authored by Rosemary and Rich Berg, 147 Practical Tips for Synchronous and Blended Technology Teaching and Learning was published in August 2007.

Rich Berg is Instructional Design/Distance Education Specialist at Instructional Communications Systems (ICS) University of Wisconsin-Extension (UWEX) and a member of the ICS Instructional Design Team. Rich holds a BA in English Education and a Masters in Instructional Technology and Telecommunications, both from Western Illinois University. Rich has been published in the College and University Media Review. He has also presented at the Annual Conference on Distance Teaching and Learning in Madison, WI, and the Illinois Education and Technology Conference in Springfield, IL. Rich is the lead trainer and materials developer for WisLine Web, the University of Wisconsin-Extension’s webconferencing application, serving the University of Wisconsin System, Wisconsin State Government, state agencies and non-profits.

Another interest for Rich is the use of podcasting for educational purposes. He recently collaborated with ICS colleagues, University of Wisconsin Learning Innovations, and a professor from University of Wisconsin-River Falls to produce podcasts for one of the professor’s courses and to develop student podcasts as part of the coursework. Rich is also co-author of 147 Practical Tips for Synchronous and Blended Technology Teaching and Learning with Dr. Lehman.
