This seminar focuses on key considerations in managing the distance learning function in higher education settings. Drawing on first-hand experience, the presenters describe major responsibilities and pitfalls in distance education management. Included are practical suggestions about the kinds of leadership skills and strategies that help to achieve management success.

Technology Used

The seminar is conducted as an audio teleconference. All you need is a speakerphone (or telephone). You will dial a phone number at program time (the WisLine bridge in Madison, WI) to be connected with all participants for the seminar. You pay your own long distance telephone charges. About the Instructors

Dr. David Brigham is the Vice Provost of Student Development at Walden University (http://www.waldenu.edu) a for-profit distance learning institution serving over 22,000 adult learners, enrolled primarily in graduate and doctoral programs. Walden University administrative offices are located in Minneapolis. Since joining the Walden staff in May 2003, David has created, staffed, and implemented the Office of Student Development. This office is responsible for providing academic support services and resources that promote the academic growth and development of all students. Current services and resources include library services, academic advising, face-to-face residencies (doctoral students), university-wide orientation courses, writing services, and electronic community building. Current initiatives include developing a set of academic skills courses (e.g., critical thinking and cultural diversity), a career services center, and a center for student success.

Before coming to Walden University, David was Dean of Learning Services at Excelsior College (http://www.excelsior.edu) where he was responsible for developing a similar set of services and resources for 18,000 adult distance learners studying at the undergraduate level. David’s background includes10 years of classroom teaching experience in New York State high schools and 6 years of teaching experience in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. David earned his Ph.D. at Syracuse University in Instructional Design, Development, and Evaluation in 1994 as an adult learner. He has been active professionally in several organizations devoted to distance and continuing education including the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA) and the American Association for Collegiate Independent Study (AACIS), for which he is a past president. David also serves as a site team evaluator for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).

Dr. Darcy W. Hardy is Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Director of the UT TeleCampus, the virtual university of The University of Texas System that supports online delivery of System-wide collaborative academic programs from UT institutions. The UT TeleCampus (http://www.telecampus.utsystem.edu) serves as a portal for students and faculty to access courses, programs and virtually all services necessary for success when teaching and learning online. The TeleCampus offers over 17 fully online programs and sees approximately 10,000 enrollments annually. Darcy is also a principal with Abrazo Partners, a virtual education consulting firm.

Darcy received her PhD in Instructional Technology from The University of Texas at Austin in 1992. She was a founding member and is a past president of the Texas Distance Learning Association (TxDLA) and has served two separate terms on the TxDLA Board of Directors. Currently, she serves as Chair Emerita with the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA), where she has been a member of the Board of Directors since 1999. She is a member of the Adobe Systems, Inc. Education Digital Innovators Advisory Board, a past member and chair of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Distance Education Advisory Council, past chair of the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA) Division of Educational Telecommunications, and a member of the Western Cooperative for Educational Telecommunications (WCET) Steering Committee. Recently, Darcy was inducted into the Texas Distance Learning Association Hall of Fame (2006) and received the WCET Richard Jonsen award (2005) for “long-standing willingness to nurture and assist others in the distance learning community.” Her most recent publication, Dancing on the Glass Ceiling: Women, Leadership and Technology, which she co-edited, received the 2005 Charles Wedemeyer Publication Award from UCEA. Darcy has received several other awards, serves on several editorial and advisory boards, and has delivered hundreds of presentations, keynotes and workshops on distance education.
