0300 Introduction to Online Learning

This four-week course is conducted via the Internet/World Wide Web to provide hands-on experience with the medium and to introduce the major elements involved in using the Internet/Web for distance learning. Through weekly activities, online discussion, readings, and Web resources, the course explores characteristics of the online environment that affect teaching and learning. The content also provides an introduction to instructional design components for developing Internet/Web courses and for supporting active learning in self-paced and collaborative modes, including elements of course structure and interaction.

Equipment and Software Required

  • a multimedia computer with Internet and Web access
  • a current browser such as a recent version of Internet Explorer
  • high-speed connection to the Internet such as DSL, cable, or broadband access

Estimated Time Commitment

Approximately five to ten hours per week for online activities, small group case studies, and e-mail discussion via Desire2Learn (Learn@UW) discussion tools. Weekly participation in discussion is required for course completion and to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Asynchronous Format

The course uses an asynchronous format for participation in weekly online discussion forums and case studies. You can send and read e-mail messages at any time, although logging in several times during the week is required for group cohesion and completion of groupwork.

About the Instructor

Shauna Schullo is director of the Distance Education Certificate Program and is responsible for curriculum development, leadership in establishing new program directions, management of day-to-day activities, marketing, and supervision. She also serves as an instructor and student advisor. Before coming to Madison Shauna was Associate Director of the Center for Distance Education and Independent Learning at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks where she dealt with many different aspects of running a distance education program. Before moving to Alaska, Shauna spent many years working with faculty, teaching and technology at the University of South Florida. Her positions at USF included Assistant Director for Instructional Technology at the Center for 21st Century Teaching Excellence and the Director of VITAL Services in the Florida Center for Instructional Technology (FCIT). In addition Shauna still teaches courses at a distance as an adjunct faculty member for the Instructional Technology program in the College of Education.

Shauna holds a B.S. in chemistry, a M.S. in chemical engineering and a Ph. D. in curriculum and instruction. Her research interests mainly revolve around distance education and the use of technology in teaching. Due to her diverse experiences, Shauna enjoys blended teaching and training as well as completely distance based environments. Shauna loves her profession and encourages all educators, trainers and students to join in her enthusiasm for learning and investigating new approaches to teaching.
