Professional Certificate in Online Teaching

How You'll Learn and Participate

We've designed this program with your full schedule and teaching responsibilities in mind. You are in charge of your learning, deciding when, where and how you study. Participation involves the following four aspects:

Learn and build a foundation

You begin your studies with the 0136 Fundamentals of Online Teaching course, which provides a grounding in the pedagogy of online teaching along with practical guidelines and strategies. You'll build on this foundation by completing required courses on assessment and facilitation and choosing electives that address your interests and needs. Courses involve a variety of content sources, including web pages with concepts and principles, articles for other viewpoints, multimedia clips, web lessons with practice exercises, reflective activities, case studies, and supplemental resources.

Reflect and archive learning in an e-portfolio system

The program involves a component of reflection to critically think about what you've learned. Each participant will have their own e-portfolio for synthesizing and capturing ideas, archiving resources, saving worksheets, and sharing achievements for feedback and continued learning.

Apply learning in a course planning project

Content and hands-on activities in the program build toward a capstone project in which you develop a plan for creating a new or converting an existing face-to-face course into an online experience. Using your own course material and learning environment, you'll address the following in your plan:

  • learner characteristics
  • content, organization and format
  • course schedule
  • course syllabus
  • technology options
  • activity choices
  • assessment and feedback

To help you with this design activity, you'll have access to Web resources that include additional information on types of online learning activities and technology options, case studies, and how-to articles. Combined with your coursework, these resources will provide ideas and strategies for weaving active learning strategies into your online course.

Receive feedback and support

You receive feedback and guidance from a DEPD staff member on exercises and planning activities for continued to growth and improvement. You're also welcome to contact staff members at any time in the program with questions and concerns. If you choose, you may make your capstone project and other work available to others in the program and invite their feedback.
