Fall 2009 Group
The Collaborative Learning Track (CLT) is designed for people who want to participate in an online version of the Distance Education Certificate Program. If you enroll in the CLT, you will be a member of a cohort group of approximately 25 people. The cohort will work as a group in doing four required core modules, where each module is a six-week online course conducted via the Internet/Web.
The four core modules 0101, 0102, 0103, and 0104 are a required part of the Certificate Program curriculum that award a total of 12 CEUs in credit. To round out your coursework, you choose up to 7 CEUs in electives. You may enroll in electives prior to starting the core program, or you may wait and take electives after the core program begins. Either way, you should aim at completing all certificate requirements in about one year.
See comparison of features for a summary of how the collaborative and self-paced tracks differ.
Features
The CLT offers
the following features:
An established schedule of core courses, with specific start and end dates.
A group learning experience where participants work together via the Internet/Web
as a cohort in completing the four core modules. You receive the print-based core modules that are a standard feature of the self-paced curriculum; but the modules are supplemented by online group activities and Web resources.
Highly interactive online learning activities that stimulate critical thinking and concept
application through discussion, debate, case studies, small group projects, and exercises. The activities are carried out via threaded discussion forums with an asynchronous format, meaning you can log in to read and post online messages at any time during the activity week. (Most activities will involve logging in several times throughout the week to keep up with discussion messages and complete group work.)
Online facilitation and individual advising from our professional team.
Your choice of electives to round out the program and tailor course selection to your interests.
A one-year completion of all certificate requirements (an extension is possible, if needed).
Time commitment: CLT participants are expected to devote at least 10 hours per week in reading,
group discussion, and application exercises during required courses and online electives.
Technology: CLT participants need a modern PC (Pentium or equivalent) or Macintosh computer with ready access to the
Internet/World Wide Web via a modem speed of 56K or faster.
Software: A Web browser, such as Internet Explorer 6.0 or Netscape 7.2, to access the World Wide Web. The courses will use Learn@UW (Desire2Learn) as a collaborative discussion tool, but you will not need to purchase or download the software. You will simply log into the courses using your Web browser.
