September 1995: Volume 1.1

WELCOME TO DESIEN (Pronounced DESIGN) - the Distance Education Symposium Interactive Electronic Newsletter - for all participants, presenters and organizers of the 1994 Distance Education Symposium.

DESIEN has been created to encourage information exchange and discussion of distance education issues concerned with: 1) Symposium team progress and institution course/program development, 2) faculty/team development, 3) technology, 4) policy 5) funding and 6) research, among participants, presenters and organizers of the 1994 UW-Extension/UW System Distance Education Symposium.

Each monthly issue will focus on an "area of interest" contain an FYI section and list ideas for future areas of focus. Your continuous input through updates, features, questions and dialogue will be instrumental in helping DESIEN evolve and grow.

DESIEN is a one-year pilot project, September, 1995 to September, 1996 and will be evaluated at the end of that time.

ISSUE FOCUS: Symposium Team Progress Reports
(as of July 1995).

UW CENTERS - UW Centers will have four courses available via Audiographics. A team member will teach one of four courses available in fall of 1995. Six courses are scheduled for spring of 1996 - Mary Grant (Dir. Cont. Ed., UW Centers).

UWC-BARRON COUNTY. - I have taught a distance education French course to high school and university students at 3 "off-campus" sites and "on campus" at the neighboring technical college - 17 students - Mary Hoeft (Prof. Comm. Arts).

UWC-ROCK COUNTY. - Two courses are being offered over Audiographics - Music and Spanish. I have spearheaded the project for teaching Music 271 and 272, although I will not be teaching it - Robert Holt (Prof. Music).

UWC-WAUKESHA - We will be offering a Spanish course using Audiographics in the fall of 1995 - Sara Toenes (Assoc. Prof.).

UW-EAU_CLAIRE - We have met together, prepared recommendations for the Provost, and individually have continued to explore DE possibilities. We have also received a UTIC grant (with Pam Gilbert of UW-Parkside) - to develop a team taught DE honors course for spring 1996 - Ronald Mickel (Coordinator of NET).

A course has been set up between one member of our team and a team member from UW-Parkside. Our team member occasionally meets with UW-Parkside - Debbie King (Credit Outreach).

We have submitted a Symposium report and recommendations to our Vice Chancellor - Rich Dirks (Video and DE Coordinator); Joan Sehle Werner (Adult Health Nursing).

UW-GREEN BAY - Three out of four members have served on or are serving on the campus DE Committee and or Instructional Technology Council. By their participation they have contributed to the development of a campus Instructional Technology Plan - Bob Skorczewski (Dir. Outreach and Exten.).

Although the team isn't working on a specific project, Jan Thornton and I, with folks from Pulp and Paper Dept., UW-Stevens Point, are planning several video workshops for fall - Nancy Sell (Prof. Natural and Applied Sciences).

I offered to do a course by e-mail and only had two takers because people, though interested, did not have access or knowledge about e-mail - Katharine Olski (UW-Green Bay).

UW-LA CROSSE - Both faculty who attended from UW-La Crosse are scheduled to teach DE - Prof. Hiebert, Compressed Video this spring and Prof. Poulton, WonderNet next fall We've also offered local workshops for 20 faculty.- Diane Schumacher (Assoc. Dir. Cont. Ed. and Exten.).

We have developed a faculty development program; the Distance Education room #1 is completed, rooms #2 and #3 are being designed; we have invested in Compressed Video as well as DS-3 - Jim Jorstad (Media Services).

UW-MADISON - We have produced a Compressed Video course and an additional course via Audiographics - Bob Schuster (Admin. Program Manager, School of Nursing).

Although the team has not met, we continue individual or school-based initiatives - Pat Lasky (Assoc. Dean School of Nursing).

We have: a) developed an E-mail Task Force, b) selected a hypermedia authoring system and c) are finishing the print based version of the course - John Rehl (Ad hoc Instructor for UWEX Independent Study).

The School of Library and Information Science has made some cooperative plans with UW-Eau Claire and UW-Superior. Some of the classes identified will be offered through Compressed Video - Vida Stanton (Asst.Prof. School of Library and Information Science).

Our school will be offering some DE courses in 1995-1996 - Thomas Walker (Asst. Prof. School of Library and Information Science).

UW-MILWAUKEE - We are presently securing PictureTel units for our campus - Paul Haubrich (Assoc. Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs).

UW-OSHKOSH - We have organized a distance learning course to be offered in fall of 1995. Our campus also has developed a Distance Learning Plan and brought in some equipment - James Grunloh (Prof. of Economics).

We have visited several in-state DE classrooms. I attend all UW-Oshkosh Task Force planning meetings and am very involved in the design/construction of our initial DE classroom - Doug Mayer (Instructional Program Manager).

We are getting ready to offer a course in fall of 1996 - Denise Robson (Prof. of Economics).

We are in the process of course development for fall 1995 - Billie Gauthier (Dir. of Cont. Ed. and Ext.).

UW-PARKSIDE - Although the Parkside team has not met as a group, one faculty was awarded a grant to help fund a class to be team-taught with another UW campus using PictureTel Compressed Video, plus I have been working closely with our UW Outreach - Kate (Owen) Pietri (Asst. Dir. Library/Learning Center Media Services).

The team is not together - one faculty member (Pam Gilbert) is involved in a collaborative DE Project; I'm
involved to join in a collaborative Project with UW-Whitewater; one team member (Kate Pietri) and I are doing DE Demos for K-12 Teachers and UW-Parkside faculty - Mark Marlaire (Dir. University Outreach).

UW-PLATTEVILLE - We have installed a room! The Symposium in August. 1994 was an excellent background for me as I began the coordination of the construction of the DE room. We are teaching 3 courses to UW-Stout. We also receive one course from UW-Stout and one from UW-Madison - Joanne Wilson (Asst. Dean/Assoc. Prof. General Engineering).

Platteville is extending its capacity to offer courses to students at DE locations. In addition to the completion of a new DE classroom, another unit will be installed in the Tower in 1995. Instructors like Joanne Wilson, Osama Jadaan and John Krogman are preparing the way for future programming by encountering and resolving problems in the application of Compressed Video, Virgil Pufahl and George Nelson are trying some creative programming through ITFS. We are also offering modest stipends to faculty and instructional academic staff to develop or modify courses or non-credit programs - Erica McIntire (Asst. Vice Chancellor, University Outreach)

UW-RIVER FALLS - Although we have done nothing as a team, several workshops have been provided, courses are being developed and others requested - (Michael Kaltenberg (Assoc. Prof. Plant and Earth Science).

UW-STEVENS POINT - A position has been approved within the WI Center for the Environmental Education unit which will help coordinate distance learning efforts - Anne Green (NSF Teacher, In-Service).

We have had some discussion; no clear project has been identified - Dennis Yockers (Asst. Prof. College of Natural Resources and Environmental Ed. Center).

UW-STOUT - Although the team has not met since August, 1994, individuals are exploring various delivery
systems- Edward Wenzel (Asst. Prof. School of Home Ec.).

UW-SUPERIOR - An array of courses is being offered each term via the NWECS network. Three courses were taped and are being edited for delayed use by extended degree students - Carolyn Petroske (Dir., Extended Degree Program).

We've continued to train faculty, deliver and produce a growing number of courses via interactive video - Peter Nordgren (Dir. Media Resource Center).

UW-WHITEWATER - We have developed: 1) a new DE classroom/studio with 42 seats, (we expect it will be completed by the end of June, 1995) and 2) a basic distance ed. curriculum - Roger Yin (Asst. Prof. Library and Learning Resources).

We are offering our first course fall of 1995 - Richard James (Prof. of Business Ed. And Office Admin.).

Although the team is not doing a project, WisBus OnLine is in operation - David Buchen (Program Coordinator, Business Outreach).

Pat and I will be sending you, via "snail mail", an article about the 1994 Symposium that we co-wrote for the 1995 ITCA Yearbook. Our first choice was to send it via DESIEN, but the format and graphics would not have transferred.

The new edition of the "Distance Education Profile and Inventory" is at the printer and will be ready in two weeks. You will each be receiving a copy from your Distance Education Committee (DEC) campus representative.

The "Wisconsin Educational Technology Conference (WETC)" will be held October 17, 18 and 19, 1995 at the Holiday Inn, Stevens Point. This conference is jointly sponsored by: UWEX, WTCS, ECB and DPI. The Agenda includes 142 sessions with two keynote speakers, "hands-on" labs and workshops and a live, national video-conference featuring the noted futurist, David Zach. If you haven't yet received your registration information, contact Rosemary.

The Conference Proceedings from the August 9-11, 1995 "Distance Learning Conference," recently held in

A newly produced videotape - BREAKING NEW GROUND: FACULTY PERSPECTIVES presents the experiences of five faculty members from the University of Wisconsin System who are teaching a wide spectrum of courses and programs via compressed video. These faculty include: Bill Ryan, UW-Extension; Joanne Wilson, UW-Platteville; Don Anderson, UW-Madison; Phil Harris, UW-Madison and Darlene Weingand, UW-Madison. The price of the 32-minute videotape, along with the in-depth print interviews with these faculty, is $54.95. The price of the videotape alone is $39.95. Shipping and handling is $6.50. DESIEN will change its focus periodically and will also incorporate special features and guest columns - We look forward to your comments, questions and requests.
