October 1996: DESIEN Evaluation Updates

On October 5, Sona Andrews, UW-Milwuakee sent a Campus Update about Milwaukee (see
below):

CAMPUS UPDATE

(Please add new information about your institution's distance education progress below.)

UW-LA CROSSE - We are currently completing our second distance education classroom
which is located in Morris Hall in the School of Education. Construction has been completed and we are now be- ginning to install a compressed video system capable of T-1 and dial-up. Wehave hired a full time scheduling and site support coordinator, Terry Wirkus. In addition, we are collaborating with a CESA 4 initiative, a leased T-1 connection with WWTC, and a dial connection with the La Crosse Public Schools. Finally, we have expanded our distance education initiative web page. Please visit us at:
http://www.uwlax.edu/InfoTech/Media/DistanceEd.html

(Jim Jorstad - Director Media Services/Educational Television Center, UW-LaCrosse)

UW-MILWAUKEE - UW-Milwaukee has developed a document entitled: Distance Education Academic Infrastructure Guidelines. It is designed to provide departments and faculty with detailed information (including the names of contact individuals) on the support infrastructure available at UWM for distance education. It includes information ranging from the technology available for use on campus to how to arrange for materials to be placed on electronic reserve. UWM's support infrastructure relies heavily of having a Distance Education Liaison (DEL) appointed in each School and College to help prioritize and coordinate distance ed curriculum and course development. Printed copies of the guidelines are available from Assistant Vice Chancellor Sona Andrews (sona@csd.uwm.edu) and will soon be available at UWM's web site.

(Sona Andrews - Assistant Vice Chancellor and Professor of Geography, UW-Milwaukee)

UW-PLATTEVILLE - We received a USDA Challenge Grant for $76,183 over three years. The Grant is for developing courses and assessing learning styles in distance education.

(John Ambrosius - Professor Agricultural Industries, UW-Platteville)
UW-RIVER FALLS - UW-River Falls received a WATF grant to complete its distance learning classrooms and implement a student-staffed faculty assistant service for course development purposes. The amount received was $49,802.

UW-River Falls held a TLTR-type workshop this fall as part of faculty development activities. The emphasis during 2 days of presentations was on multiple technologies.

(Barbara Audley - Director of Continuing Education Extension, UW-River Falls)

UW-SUPERIOR -UW-Superior activated its second distance ed class- room and second interactive video network link this fall, with funding through an ECB distance ed grant and UW System's Instructional Technology Improvements Program. The new classroom in Erlanson Hall, our business building, seats 28 students. The additional capacity permitted an expansion of our fall schedule to two undergraduate courses, five upper division/graduate courses, and one postsecondary options course for high school students.

A grant from the UW System Undergraduate Initiative will assist in developing courses for delivery to the Rhinelander/Minocqua/Eagle River area via compressed video.

(Peter Nordgren - Director Media Resource Center, UW-Superior)

FYI:

UTIC and UW Centers Workshop

Grant Writing Workshop on Instructional Technology

January 25, 1997
UW Center - Marathon
518 S. 7th Avenue
Wausau, WI 54401

The purpose of the workshop is to introduce faculty and staff across the UW Centers to strategies for competitive grant writing and information on funding sources. The focus of the workshop is on proposals for instructional technology, especially computers and software.

There will be two sessions on Saturday, January 25, 1997. Topics to be addressed during the morning session include: forms of needed technology to be integrated in the curriculum, information on foundations and corporations across the country supporting efforts of using technology to enhance instruction, guidelines in writing proposals, and examples of successful grant applications. This session will involve large- and small-group discussions and short presentations by colleagues from different disciplines with experience in writing and obtaining grants.

The afternoon session will involve discipline specific and/or division wide working groups (depending on the number of participants representing the different disciplines). The purpose of this session is to have each group actually start putting together a "skeleton" of a proposal, that is, defining the needs of the department/division in instructional technology, choosing the funding sources, and at minimum creating an outline of the first draft of the grant application. We hope this workshop will provide an opportunity for increased collaboration across a range of disciplines, and a starting point for increased support of our activities from external sources. The workshop will start at 10am so that colleagues from distant Centers would have adequate time to drive to Wausau during (we hope not very bad) winter conditions.

Program: 9:00 - 10:00am Registration (coffee and rolls) 10:00 - 12:00pm
Presentations and Discussions 12:00 - 1:00pm Lunch
1:00 - 3:30pm Working Groups

This workshop is open to all UW Centers faculty and staff. Funding is available to cover the expenses for 52 people (4 per Center), including lunch and travel costs for one vehicle per Center. This limit of 4 people per Center is a flexible one, taking into account the possibility that one or more Centers may participate with fewer than 4 people. Also, Deans and Chairs could nominate one or more people above this limit, if they would cover their corresponding expenses.
Therefore, ANYONE interested should apply (via e-mail or regular mail) directly to either Theo Koupelis or Frank Gonzalez at the address above. Our e-mail addresses are: tkoupeli@uwc.edu and fgonzale@uwc.edu. Applications should include: applicant's name, campus and department, office phone number, and e-mail address. DEADLINE for applications/nominations: Friday, December 6, 1996.
