June 1997: Volume 2.8 Updates

Correction:

Thanks to one of our "sharp-eyed" readers, an error was spotted early...The dates for Technocamp should be scheduled for July 8-10, not June. Please make the correction in your issue. Thanks!

Just a note about "what's happening now" in the world of distance learning (at UW-Stevens Point):

UW-Stevens Point's distance learning facilities will look a little different this fall! The WONDER/ITFS classroom in the College of Professional Studies will be expanded from a capacity of 14 to 32!! In addition to the larger room, the monitor sizes are increasing from 27" to 70". The instructor station will now include two computers -- accommodating both PC and MAC users.

The ETN site on campus is moving from the Learning Resources Center into the Communication Arts Center Room 110...one more step toward a goal of bringing together as much of the distance learning technology as possible. University Telecommunications staff in the Communication Arts Center already schedule and facilitate the Wis-View and compressed video technologies there.

Please pardon multiple postings.

This PC Week "shootout" offers a chance to look at how effectively the corporate "pros" can create curricular materials with their own multimedia development tools. Please consider attending the whole event (reservations necessary) or the FREE demonstrations on Thursday, July 31.

If you are interested in judging this event as a UW System representative, please contact me. We are looking for the names of a few more interested persons to pass along to the planning committee. This would be a commitment for all three days.

PC Week Corporate Partner Labs On Site Evaluation

Evaluation of Multimedia Instructional Development Tools

An evaluation of multimedia development tools for Internet instruction will take place in Madison, WI, July 29-31, in cooperation with PC Week and Inside Technology Training. The goal is to identify multimedia course development software package(s) to be used by faculty and other content experts to deliver instruction/training over the Internet or Intranet. Leading vendors are being invited to produce materials based upon a pre-selected curriculum which will have supplemental graphics, photos, and short video/audio clips available. The vendors will have two days to create output which is intended to be accessible by a student/employee/customer using a web browser. The tools will be evaluated based upon specific criteria as well as upon the quality of the materials developed during the 2-day development process. All vendors will be supplied with identical Windows-based multimedia development machines running either Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.

The Wisconsin Technical College System is hosting the event in cooperation with two other PC Week Corporate Partners -- Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company and the Wisconsin Department of Administration. The University of Wisconsin System, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and other educator and training organizations will be attending and will provide judges for the competition.

Vendors will develop their multimedia distance-delivered version of the selected curriculum on July 29th and 30th as well as provide product demonstrations. Limited space is available for these first two days so confirmed registrations are requested. On July 31st, vendors will present the results of their two days of development to a full audience -- these presentations are open to all educators, corporate training professionals, and other interested parties. There is no charge to attend this event, however, advance registration is requested.

Complete details and registration information can be found at http://tomba.ele.madison.tec.wi.us/tools.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF UNU/IAS INTERNET VIDEOCONFERENCE ON THE FUTURE OF HIGHER EDUCATION AND LEARNING

Date: 8 July 1997, 16:00-18:00 (Tokyo time)

UNESCO Principal Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, in collaboration with the United Nations University / Institute of Advanced Studies, Government of Japan, and the Association of Universities of Asia and the Pacific, will be hosting a three day conference on the higher education on July 8-10. In the interest of providing a forum for dynamic discussion on this important topic, the UNU/IAS will be setting up an Internet Videoconference for public participation and is inviting you to take part in this global "virtual" gathering.

The UNESCO/UNU Regional Conference on Higher Education and Learning is one of the many Regional Conferences coordinated by UNESCO this year. By articulating strategies for academic cooperation in the Asia Pacific region in the 21st century, the Conference is expected to make a valuable contribution to the UNESCO World Conference on Higher Education in Paris next year.

The main objectives of the World Conference on Higher Education are:
To seek from the international community a clear commitment to support human resource development as an essential element for the harmonious development of societies and their members; To develop a global plan of action at international level; To contribute to the renewal of higher education for the 21st century and the construction of peace founded on equity, justice, solidarity and freedom.

Through this regional conference, UNU/IAS hopes to advance these objectives by focusing on their development within the Asia Pacific region.

The Conference aims to capture one aspect of future educational setting by broadcasting the entire session to the public via the Internet and providing an interactive forum. 4 telecommunication sites at UNU Headquarters (Tokyo), Asian Institute of Technology (Bangkok), Bandung Institute of Technology (Bandung), and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Hong Kong) will be linked to hold an interactive discussion. Furthermore, anyone who is logged on to our website will be able to see and hear the discussion and contribute their comments via e-mail.

Among the panelists from the 4 sites mentioned above are Professor Jun Murai (Keio Univ.), Prof. Van Ginkel (future rector of UNU), Senator Edgardo J. Angara (Republic of the Philippines), Professor Victor Ordonez (Director of UNESCO PROAP), Professor Nishijima (Former-Rector of Kyoto University), and Dr. Ken Tsutsumibayashi (UNU/IAS) from the Tokyo site, Professor Roger Downer (President of the Asian Institute of Technology) and Mr. Sulak Sivarak (Social Critic) from the Bangkok site, Professor Budhy Soegijoko (National Development Planning Agency of Indonesia), Professor B. S. Kusbiantoro and Professor Widiadnyana Merati (both of Bandung Institute of Technology) from the Bandung site, and Professor Vincent Shen (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) from the Hong Kong site.

The Conference has also been enriched by original contributions made by valued participants of a three week "Electronic Workshop on the Future of Higher Education and Learning ," held in April and May this year. The summary of the Electronic Workshop, (which may be found in http://chcd-0005.ias.unu.edu:8888/ hedu/hedu.html) contains the varied perspectives of approximately 500 participants on issues related to higher education and learning in an age of telematics, and will be presented at the Conference as a focal point of discussion. It is our pleasure to invite you to join our Conference via Internet as a demonstration of the future of educational communication. We await your participation.

For technical instructions on participation, please log on to our website at

Coming to your computer: a new, free, peer-reviewed e-journal, THE JOURNAL OF LIBRARY SERVICES FOR DISTANCE EDUCATION. The first issue, to be published soon, will contain a series of articles by experts in the field, speculating about the future of library support for distance learning.

International in scope, the journal will publish refereed articles focusing on the issues and challenges of providing research/information services to students enrolled in formal post-secondary distance education. It will particularly strive to meet the continuing education needs of practitioners by providing a forum for the discussion of extended learning policies and practices, and trends in information technology as they impact the delivery of library services for distance learners and faculty.
