E-Mail Pub, Online Math Specs, Internet Growth

* The E-MAIL PUB, the Association for Interactive Media is offering two new E-mail publications, the Internet Politics Insider and the Research Update Service: http://www.interactivehq.org.

* The World Wide Web Consortium has recommended a new set of technical specifications for displaying mathematical symbols and equations on Web pages. MathML, or Mathematical Markup Language, supplements HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), the standard coding to create Web pages, and is compatible with XML (Extensible Markup Language). Web users can download a "plug-in" that will work with their browsers to view the MathML pages: http://www.w3/org/Math. (Chronicle of Higher Education 17 Apr 98)

* A study by the U.S. Commerce Department : http://ecommerce.gov/ says that traffic on the Internet is doubling every hundred days and predicts that electronic commerce will grow to $300 billion a year by 2002. (USA Today 16 Apr 96)

DE LIBRARY SUPPORT
WILS, NILI

* Visit the WILS World URL: http://www.wils.wisc.edu/wworld.html. This year WILS World will offer two tracks: distance learning and interlibrary loan, with a smattering of other information. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. (From: Debbie Cardinal, Wisconsin InterLibrary Services WILS Madison, WI)

* The 11-month old National Information Literacy Institute (NILI) intends to fill a vital distance education need. NILI will offer programming that will prepare librarians to become effective teachers of information literacy programs; support librarians and other educators and administrators in playing leadership roles in the development and implementation of information literacy programs; forge new relationships throughout the educational community (K-12, public sector, and higher education) to work towards information literacy curriculum development and offer opportunities for growth and development in the changing field of information literacy.

NILI's first program will be an immersion program for new and mid-career librarians who are involved in the development and delivery of information literacy programs. The immersion institute will be offered in Summer 1999.

The second NILI initiative will be a "Best Practices & Assessment Seminar." Institutional teams will have an opportunity to learn about the exemplary instruction programs around the country and begin the work of developing or redesigning their existing information literacy program. For those readers who want to keep abreast of NILI developments there is, of course, a Web site: http://www.ala.org/acrl/nili/nilihp.html. As the NILI Web site matures, it will become a pointer to other important sites on information literacy, as well as an informational site in its own right.
