Instructional Systems Inc. (ISI) and Houghton Mifflin College Division together are proud to announce another Special Event on The Wellspring: An Online Community of Distance Educators. This first of "The Seminars on Distance Education: A Series of Live Chat Sessions," presented by Houghton Mifflin, will feature Dr. Wayne Jones, Assistant Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Binghamton University and Co-Director of The Center for Learning and Teaching. Professor Jones will host the chat on the subject of "Science Across the Curriculum: Science Specific Issues Meet Universal DL Challenges." The session's focus will be on the challenges encountered in Dr. Jones's computer-based Science Across the Curriculum project, funded by the NSF.

The next Special Event on The Wellspring will be hosted by Dr. J. Olin Campbell, Research Associate Professor of Engineering Education at the Center for Innovation in Engineering Education located in the School of Engineering at Vanderbilt University. Prof. Campbell is Principal Investigator on a Sloan Foundation project to evaluate the cost effectiveness of interactive distance learning using the World Wide Web, as well as being Co-Editor of the "Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks" and the "ALN Magazine" and Director of the ALNTalk online discussions. His live chat session is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, May 18th.

A four-day Institute for Leadership in Distance Education is scheduled for June 28-July 2, 1998 by the American Center for Distance Education at the Penn State Conference Center Hotel, State College, Pennsylvania. The Institute will help distance education leaders with new responsibilities meet today's challenges.

The Keynote Presentation will be "The Globalization of Distance Education: Its Impact on Our Institutions" by Michael G. Moore, academic director of The American Center for the Study of Distance Education (ACSDE) at Penn State.

Other presenters will include: A. W. Bates, Ph.D., director of Distance Education and Technology; Chere Campbell Gibson, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of the graduate program in Continuing and Vocational Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; Gary E. Miller, D.Ed., associate vice president for Distance Education and director of Penn State's World Campus and Janet Poley, Ph.D., widely recognized as a leader in developing collaborative distance education initiatives both nationally and internationally
