Coordinator University of Wisconsin - Madison
July 20, 1999 -- Announcement of Position
University of Wisconsin - Madison
Division of Information Technology (DoIT)
Senior Programmer/Analyst for Web-Based Learning Systems and other Instructional & Information Retrieval Applications
The Library & Information Retrieval Applications group (LIRA) is seeking an energetic senior programmer/analyst to join our Instructional & Information Retrieval applications team. This position will primarily develop and support "Web-Based Learning Systems" (WBLS), as well as other applications including some of their web-based technical infrastructure. You will learn and apply leading-edge web development skills in a stimulating University environment for a variety of customers and multiple Unix and Windows NT servers.
The largest WBLS project is the creation and support of a "WebCT Utility" service for University of Wisconsin System institutions including UW-Madison. WebCT is a rich and complex WBLS product developed at the University of British Columbia, widely adopted in higher education. Faculty create and deliver their own course materials within the WebCT framework, for customized learning/testing and distance education. This position will learn WebCT inside and out; install, test, and support new WebCT releases and products; develop custom linkages and relational databases for WebCT within the larger academic systems environment; and develop web-based utilities and enhancements in Perl/CGI and JavaScript (e.g., WBLS administrator features, user authentication features).
Other applications include an Academic Course Web Service, emerging vendor software for standards-based Instructional Management Systems, development of XML-based applications such as a wildlife management knowledgebase delivered via web or CD-ROM, creation of IIS/ASP-based text and image retrieval systems using Visual Interdev tools and Oracle and MS Access back-ends; and work with custom search engines and other web technologies, including Madison's central campus web services and DoIT's intranet. Some of these may be shared with Electronic/Digital Library projects.
A strong candidate for this position will have several years of systems development experience, including web application development and support experience in UNIX or Windows NT. A proven ability to learn new technical environments and skills will complement experience with prototyping, programming, data modeling or database analysis/design, and web technologies. Strong communications and teamwork skills and customer orientation are essential.
Starting salary will be from $36,270-$50,112 per year, based on qualifications, plus excellent University benefits. To request application materials, please contact Brad Wirtz, DoIT Human Resources, (608) 262-0596, 1210 West Dayton St., Madison, WI 53706; email to brad.wirtz@doit.wisc.edu. Application materials will be accepted until the position is filled, with the first review taking place on or about August 2, 1999.
The University of Wisconsin is an equal opportunity employer, and specifically invites and encourages applications from women and minorities.
