REQUEST/ANSWERS - Costing International Distance Learning

In the last DESIEN issue, Janice B.Carmichael asked "is anyone writing anything on pricing distance education to INTERNATIONAL clients; in particular, creative cost-sharing arrangements since the production costs of doing DL are high and we need to figure out how to split the costs with our clients in some honorable way."

Several of the answers are worth sharing: "Are you aware of the Distance Education Report that comes out twice a month? The editor is Fred Saba and the publisher is Magna Publishers in Madison Wisconsin." Also - "I'd look for some writings by Tony Bates on costing. I'm wondering about the Commonwealth of Learning in British Columbia. They facilitate cost-and course-sharing with underdeveloped countries." (Prof. Chere Gibson UW-Madison) And - "As you know pricing DL programs can be a very challenging task. I would assert: price DL programs on VALUE not COST". This implies you need do a market analysis to see what the students perceive the value to be." Finally - "Regarding DL program design for international audiences, I can think of one article that may help you.
