GROK: THE EDUCATION ISSUE - The Industry Standard, a weekly print newsmagazine, and TheStandard.com CLICK: http://www.thestandard.com/ a companion news site, have been providing "intelligence for the Internet economy" since April 1998. In addition to regular "stock grok," "media grok," and "shop grok" sections, TheStandard.com runs special edition "groks" and this month's is about online education. The term "grok" comes from Robert Heinlein's novel Stranger in a Strange Land; the Free Online Dictionary of Computing CLICK: http://www.nue.org/foldoc/ identifies it as a verb meaning "to understand, usually in a global sense; connotes intimate and exhaustive knowledge."

Of note for the post-secondary audience are Mark K. Anderson's article "Professors had better pay attention...or they may not get paid at all," about intellectual property ownership issues in online education; Michael Mechanic's "Wiring the ivory tower," about the difficulties institutions face in keeping up with technology; and Tim Grieve's "Keeping up with Jones," about Glenn Jones' JonesKnowledge.com CLICK: http://www.jonesknowledge.com/ empire, which includes Jones International University, CLICK: http://www.jonesinternational.edu/ The K-12 audience will find articles on home schooling, online high schools and electronic curricula.
