GRANTS/AWARDS - The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation; Bruce Dewey Receives CCUMC Silver Reel Award; GWETC Establishes Carman Award; ICDE Prizes of Excellence

 

THE ANDREW W. MELLON FOUNDATION - is accepting grant applications for research on whether, and how, technology can enhance higher education in cost-effective ways. BRUCE DEWEY RECEIVES CCUMC SILVER REEL AWARD - Bruce Dewey, Distance Education Specialist at ICS, recently received the Silver Reel Award from the Consortium of College and University Media Centers (CCUMC). Bruce was presented with the award during the CCUMC conference held October 19-23, at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. The Silver Reel Award has been given just nine times in the 35 year history of the CCUMC. It is given in recognition of outstanding leadership and superior service to the organization. The award recognizes Bruce's many accomplishments and positions with CCUMC. "We all owe him a huge thank you and a vow that we will follow his model and work hard on the things we care about," said Jan Dickens, of the University of California, Davis.

The plaque awarded to Bruce states:

"because he knew that to build a dream requires long hours of other things than dreaming, and because he gave such hours to our collective dream" Congratulations, Bruce!

GWETC ESTABLISHES CARMAN AWARD - At GWETC 2000, a new award was initiated to honor outstanding educators who have made distinctive contributions to the field of technology and learning. The award was named after the first chair of the WETC conference(now GWETC), Sandy Carman, WTCS Board. A request for proposals form will be developed for the GWETC Web site in February. The first award(s) will be presented at GWETC 2001.

ICDE PRIZES OF EXCELLENCE - ICDE is pleased to announce that the ICDE Prizes of Excellence will be awarded in April 2001 to deserving entities for the highest possible excellence in the fields of distance and virtual learning. Decisions will be based solely on merit. Winners will receive the prize at the ICDE 20th World Conference in Dusseldorf, Germany, during the opening ceremony on April 1, 2000 and will travel to Oslo to deliver their lecture. Awards - a Statuette and Diploma will be in the following areas: 1. The Institutional Prize 2. The Individual Prize 3.
