A faculty member is not always available to teach specialized course on all campuses. Distance education can make those courses available on a cost effective basis. Compressed video technology is used to connect the Agricultural and Natural Resources Law class that is taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and University of Wisconsin-River Falls campuses. The technology gives students at the distant campuses access to the specialized expertise of a UW-Madison faculty member. Some effort is required to adapt a class to the restrictions of the technology. Students must also adapt to the technology. However, as the semester progresses, the technology fades into the background and the two classrooms become one.
