Designing a Web-Based Graduate Degree Program Optimized for Adult Professionals Learning at a Distance:
An Innovative Graduate Engineering Degree Program Employing a Cohort Learning Model with Integrated Web-Based Instruction, Web-Conferencing and Annual Residency

ABSTRACT

This case study explores several key design strategies behind the Web-based graduate engineering degree that won the University Continuing Education Association's top award in 2002 for degree programs in North America. The discussion focuses on program's approach to Web-based learning, its use of complementary synchronous formats including weekly Web conferences and an annual residency, and the use of a fixed curriculum with a stable learning cohort. The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Master of Engineering in Professional Practice program is an interdisciplinary graduate engineering degree for mid-career engineers improving their abilities to lead and manage teams, projects and programs.
