In 1999 the University of Wisconsin Madison School of Nursing, along with the four other degree-granting institutions began to move from synchronous distance education courses to asynchronous distance education courses. Health Assessment was the first of such courses to be developed and delivered in a web based asynchronous format to nursing students enrolled in the BSN completion program. Because of students inflexible schedules, the course needed to be designed such that it could be taken at anytime of the day and at any place, yet still adhere to the traditional academic calendar. The opportunity to place a course on line opened up a chance for new and different ways of teaching and interaction with students. Initially, questions on best teaching and learning practices were explored. Secondly, advantages and disadvantages of Face-to-Face teaching and on line teaching were compared. From this information a series of design steps were identified and the design of the course was determined.
