SAAIP/TOPjobs - Employee Information

UW-Extension Employer Participation Form

What is the SAAIP/TOPjobs program?

The Summer Affirmative Action Internship Program (SAAIP) is designed to recruit racial/ethnic minorities, female students, and students with disabilities for positions that provide valuable training, experience, and exposure to jobs in the University of Wisconsin System and state government. The Office of State Employment Relations, Division of Affirmative Action (OSER/DAA) assists in the coordination of the SAAIP/TOPjobs program at the state level. Stephanie Endres is the SAAIP/TOPjobs Coordinator for UW-Extension.

Employer Eligibility

All University of Wisconsin-Extension departments are eligible to participate in the SAAIP. Hiring authorities interested in participating in the program must submit to the SAAIP Coordinator a completed Participation Form and a detailed position description. The deadline for employer applications is February 1, 2008. Timely submission of this information is very important to the successful recruitment of students possessing the requisite education and/or work experience.

Supervisors must also commit to developing an ongoing relationship with the student interns to cultivate student interest in future career opportunities with UW-Extension. (Supervisor Responsibilities and Selection Criteria.)

How does my department get involved?

Participation Form
UW-Extension departments must submit the SAAIP Department Participation Form to Stephanie Endres by February 1, 2008 to ensure timely referrals of candidates. A detailed position description including: duties and responsibilities, knowledge and skills preferred, salary information, location and hours of work must be included.
Types of Jobs
Departments identify the positions according to their specific needs. This is not a "student help" program. The position description should define substantive, meaningful profession job responsibilities for the interns. Some examples of occupation areas are:
  • Accounting
  • Business Administration
  • Computer Science
  • Web Development
  • Consumer Science
  • Education
  • Human Resources
  • Journalism
  • Research
  • Marketing
  • Public Relations
  • Social Services
Recruitment Process
OSER/AA conducts targeted recruitment throughout Wisconsin for university departments and other participating state agencies. The SAAIP coordinator conducts additional targeted recruitment for UWEX positions.
Referral Process
OSER/AA sends a list of candidates and copies of their resumes to UW-Extension and other participating state agencies. Universities and agencies are encouraged to contact candidates immediately to arrange for interviews.
Salary
Salaries are set by the departments with the position vacancy. The salary depends on the level of duties and responsibilities assigned to the intern. The minimum hourly wage set by UW-Extension is $7.50.
Orientation
The Summer Orientation/Employment Seminar is a forum for interns to gain a better understanding and perspective on what to expect in the job market, as well as valuable training that will enhance their career goals. Participating employers are encouraged to attend with their intern. The date of the seminar will be announced at a later time.

Student Eligibility

To be eligible for this program, students must be a junior, senior or graduate student enrolled in an accredited four-year college or university, or enrolled in the second year of a two-year technical school program at the beginning of the next fall semester. You will require a student application.
