The Workplace Climate Survey is a way to measure the climate of diversity and inclusiveness at UW-Extension with regard to race, ethnicity, gender identity and sexual orientation, religious affiliation, veteran status, and other dimensions of diversity.
A welcoming, or inclusive, workplace is important in order to recruit and retain talented individuals. All employees have a better opportunity to succeed when the work environment is respectful of individual and group needs, abilities and potential.
The climate assessment project is sponsored and coordinated by the University of Wisconsin System. All 15 institutions in the UW System have or are currently conducting broad-based climate assessments led by the national research team of Rankin & Associates (R&A). Rankin & Associates specializes in multiple-identity climate assessments in higher education and has led climate assessment surveys at over 80 universities nationwide, in addition to state Extension services at Land Grant institutions, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
The climate surveys throughout the UW System reflect the specific needs and concerns of the institutions where they are conducted. After each grouping of UW institutions completes surveys, the results are reported to the UW System Board of Regents.
The UW-Extension Climate survey was conducted on June 6-17th, 2011. Sue Rankin offered a presentation on October 20th to review the results of the survey. An executive summary is also available. A cross-divisional implementation team is being organized, which will review the climate survey data, identify potential action steps, communicate with staff, and coordinate the institution's response.

The Campus Climate Survey results will be submitted directly to a secure Rankin & Associates server, where any computer identification that might identify participants is deleted from the submissions. Any comments provided by participants are also separated at submission so that comments are not attributed to any demographic characteristics. These comments will be analyzed using content analysis and submitted as an appendix to the survey report. Anonymous quotes from submitted comments will also be used throughout the report to give "voice" to the quantitative data.
In the event of any publication or presentation resulting from the assessment, no personally identifiable information will be shared. Your confidentiality in participating will be kept to the degree permitted by the technology used. Rankin & Associates will strip IP addresses when the survey is submitted. While no guarantees can be made regarding the interception of data sent via the Internet by any third parties, the survey is run on a firewalled Web server with forced 128-bit SSL security. The survey is stored in an SQL database that can only be accessed locally. The server itself may only be accessed using encrypted SSH connections originating from the local network. The Web server runs with the SE-Linux security extensions (that were developed by the NSA).
In addition, the external consultant (Rankin & Associates) will not report any group data for groups of fewer than 5 individuals that may be small enough to compromise confidentiality. Instead, Rankin & Associates will combine the groups to eliminate any potential for demographic information to be identifiable. Please also remember that you do not have to answer any question or questions about which you are uncomfortable.
