Partnerships for Pollution Solutions (PPS) is working to recognize and support private initiatives that address environmental issues in agriculture.
Here's what you will find at this site. Page through our model directory to learn about 32 innovative programs supported or sponsored by the private sector. Look at our case studies to see how 14 of these programs are tackling critical environmental problems such as manure management and runoff control.
Highlighting these pioneering efforts serves several purposes. Producer groups and agri-businesses who want to be proactive can learn from others' success. Policy makers can see how partnerships with the private sector can leverage limited government funds to produce higher public dividends. Those concerned about the environment can appreciate the contributions of the private sector and find common ground to achieve new levels of environmental protection through cooperation.
There is a more immediate purpose for this project. It can start the process of identifying private initiatives for inclusion in resource directories used by farmers and those who work with them. People in the field need better information about programs that promote good stewardship. They need directories that list all locally-available resources, not just those sponsored by government agencies.
To stimulate the creation and expansion of directories and other information resources, we have developed several aids. Included at this site are guidelines for developing a local directory. Using these guidelines and the model directory, states and communities can develop comprehensive local directories.
PPS is a cooperative effort among diverse private and public organizations with long-term interests in agricultural issues. Membership includes Tennessee Valley Authority,U.S. EPA, Ground Water Protection Council, AgriBank (Farm Credit Bank) , CTIC, The Groundwater Foundation, Farm*A*Syst/Home*A*Syst, National Association of Conservation Districts, Agricultural Compliance Assistance Center, National Rural Water Association, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Cargill Hybrid Seeds, American Farm Bureau Federation, Iowa Farm Bureau, and North Central Regional Center for Rural Development. PPS is concerned about protection of rural water resources and recognizes the need to protect water quality through increased use of pollution prevention practices and partnership-building.
