A wide variety of technologies are now available worldwide. It is important for the instructor to know about and understand these technologies and make the appropriate selection to meet the instructional goals. It is also important to consider the full spectrum of technologies and explore a blended approach, utilizing the appropriate technologies to meet the needs of those the instructor is trying to reach.
When blending technologies to meet objectives instructors should keep it simple. With a wide range available, from videoconferencing and webconferencing on the high-end to email, fax machines, and the telephone on the low-end, today’s instructional leaders need to be careful not to overwhelm the participants or let the technologies get in the way of the message.
Instructional design provides an important starting point in making the selection, and in blending the appropriate tools to meet the needs of the learners. An effective instructional design process provides the capability of bringing together both synchronous and asynchronous experiences to meet goals in ways that are both practical and effective for those involved.
