This page provides some limited information regarding difficulties you may encounter when trying to access a live or archived media file. This information is probably most appropriate for your in-house IT Support staff since it may require Administrator privileges to make changes to a network, firewall or computer.
In the spring of 2007, Microsoft issued version 11 of their Windows Media Player. Often times this will automatically update your local computer replacing the previous version 9 or 10. This new version does not work well with streaming services that do not use Microsoft's Windows Media Server application. If you find it difficult to receive a live or archived stream from ICS a couple of options are available to you:
- Try using the Real Media Player option if that is available on the web page. If Real Media Player is not installed on your computer you can download the free Basic version from Real Networks
- Uninstall WMP v11 and re-install v10
- Follow the instructions given at this link to utilize a different media player on your computer
Most difficulties with not being able to receive a Windows live stream are related to firewall issues on the local network. There are two resolutions for this:
- Certain ports need to be opened up to allow the streaming information to pass through to the computer. These ports are: 80, 8080, 554 and 1755.
- The media server's name or IP address needs to be allowed access to the network as a "friendly" entity.
Macintosh computers with "Windows Media Player 9 for Macintosh" should have no trouble receiving Windows Media audio or video files.
This document will provide instructions for working with a Macintosh computer.
