The effective use of distance education doesn’t just happen. It happens — by design. I’m Rosemary Lehman, Manager of the ICS Instructional Design Team.

ICS provides technical and training support and services for the ‘spectrum’ of synchronous technologies.

Our Instructional Design Team helps educators and trainers select and then blend these technologies into their courses and programs…

Audioconferencing
Videoconferencing
Webconferencing and
Webcasting

We also research new emerging technologies like blogs and wikis, handhelds computers, and iPODs.

As we design for the use of these technologies our Operations Department and Multimedia Services play a key role as do the organizations we partner with.

Now, more than ever, it’s important to use a solid design process and principles.

The process and principles we’ve developed at ICS are based on learner-centered research and years of experience - and stress accessibility. The process includes Planning and Orienting, Developing, Implementing, and Followup. The principles that fall into these areas are:

  • Understanding the Learner
  • Knowing the Environment
  • Being a Team Player
  • Developing Formats/Strategies
  • Creating Interaction Activities
  • Integrating Support
  • Monitoring for Quality

As we work with instructors and they refine their skills, we like to share their experiences - here are just a few:

a governmental agency created an exceptional statewide meeting and realized thousands of dollars in savings by using videoconferencing

an international media group connected to hundreds of teachers and K-12 students around the world, with key speakers and dialogue, using a blend of four technologies

a UW-Madison faculty and his class collaborated via webconferencing on a document that represented their cohesive sense of community - and the list goes on.
