| As the creator of a list, you will “own” and manage your list using
e-mail commands.
Where to Send Commands
As list-owner, you have administrative privileges that let you add and
remove list-members. Use e-mail to send the administrative commands listed
in this guide to the computer program that manages all lists. Its e-mail
address is:
listproc@uwex.edu
Administrative Commands Versus Messages to Subscribers
Messages containing administrative commands are only sent to listproc@uwex.edu.
Messages intended for subscribers are only sent to that list’s particular
e-mail address
(e.g. test-list@uwex.edu).
Administrative Message Guidelines
Address your message to “listproc@uwex.edu”. Leave the subject-line
blank. Place your command in the body of the message, starting at the first
line and first position. You may send multiple commands, one command
per line, in a single e-mail message. Restrict the content of your
list-owner messages to listproc@uwex.edu to just the administrative commands.
You should leave out greetings, “please” or “thank you.” You should also
turn off a signature if you have one.
In the commands below, items enclosed in [ ] are optional. Items enclosed
in < > are required.
How to Add a Member
Send the following command to listproc@uwex.edu. The list-member affected
automatically receives an e-mail notice of your action, unless you indicate
not to. You may enter more than one command in a single message,
one command per line. You may mix commands in the same message;
for example, it’s good practice to issue a “review” command as the last
line in an administrative command message to verify your actions.
command:
[quiet] add <list> <password> <address> <name>
examples:
add test-list supernova john.jones@uwex.edu John Jones
or
quiet add test-list supernova john.jones@uwex.edu John Jones
The quiet command prevents the user from being notified.
To verify your additions, use the review command described below.
How to Remove a Member
Send the following command to listproc@uwex.edu. The list-member affected
automatically receives an e-mail notice of your action unless you specify
“quiet.”
command:
[quiet] delete <list> <password> <address>
example:
delete test-list supernova john.jones@uwex.edu
or
quiet delete test-list supernova john.jones@uwex.edu
If the quiet command is used, users will not be notified of the deletion.
To verify your removals, use the review command, described below.
How to Review List Members
Send the following command to listproc@uwex.edu. You’ll receive a complete
list of list-members return e-mail.
command:
review <ListName>
example:
review test-list
How to Create an Alias for a List Member
Alias an existing subscriber to a new address. Used in cases where a
subscriber
needs to be able to send mail from another machine or the subscriber's
email
address can appear in multiple formats. Mail will be accepted
from both the
address-as-subscribed and from the new-address.
list password new-address address-as-subscribed
Example:
For a list named "my-list" whose owner password is "foo" the user
ht56@nebbuch.org has informed the list owner that occasionally she
would like to
be able to send commands to ListProc from another machine but doesn't
want to
have to subscribe from that machine also. The list owner complied
by setting up
an alias for the second account.
alias my-list foo ret@kabb.net
ht56@nebbuch.org
so that all mail from the second address, ret@kabb.net, is seen by ListProc
as
being from ht56@nebbuch.org
