Four Lakes Council, Boy Scouts of America, will honor Joan Palmer and five other top volunteers with the Silver Beaver Award at the council's annual dinner, May 17, 2000 at the Nakoma Country Club in Madison. Joan is a media specialist for the Program Development and Evaluation unit of University of Wisconsin-Extension Cooperative.

The Division of Continuing Education Extension has announced the six recipients of Diversity Program Development Initiative (DPDI) funding for the 2000-2001 fiscal year. "The DPDI provides seed money for UW Institutions to develop and implement new diversity ventures that are consistent with the goals and initiatives outlined in UW-Extension's Plan 2008," said Assistant Dean Kay Taube, who chaired the review committee.

A delegation of 38 Americans from the Wisconsin Rural Leadership Program (WRLP) recently returned from visiting and learning first-hand about leadership in Turkey. While in Turkey for 17 days the group was welcomed by several key leaders in many regions throughout the country. During their visits the participants studied the country's political, economic, historical, and cultural aspects.

Each summer, parents face a dilemma about childcare for their school-aged children. While everyone agrees that a 7-year-old shouldn't be left alone all day, it's less clear what type and level of adult supervision is appropriate for children ages 10, 11 or 12. Yet, studies show there are substantial risks for children ages 10 to 13 that stay home unsupervised -- including increased risk of drug, alcohol and tobacco use and experimentation with other risky behaviors.
