Public Relations Department 432 North Lake Street Madison, WI 53706 608-262-9871 608-262-8404 (fax) 608-265-9317 (TTY)Compost workshops available
One of the best things you can do for your garden is to add organic matter -- compost or humus -- to the soil.
Compost helps plants grow bigger and better and helps soil hold on to nutrients and water. It also saves money -- reducing your need for other lawn and garden products and reducing the amount of trash you generate. And since yard and garden waste accounts for almost a fifth of the trash people throw out each year, composting reduces the load on landfills while it increases soil quality.
The Master Composter Training Program 2000 workshop series has been scheduled at three Wisconsin locations. The workshops are designed for people who want to learn more about backyard composting and/or those who would like to be involved in teaching others about it locally. People that may be interested in this program include County extension agents, Master Garderners, solid waste and recycling personnel, nature center staff, 4-H volunteer leaders, youth leaders, and camp staff.
Workshops will be held on May 15 in Rhinelander; May 22 in Elkhorn; and June 3 in Appleton.
A home study course with detailed information on backyard composting will be sent to course participants who pre-register for a workshop by the registration deadline. Participants who pass the home study course exam, attend the morning and afternoon session, and perform three follow-up outreach activities per year will be recognized by program sponsors and certified as a Master Composter. UW-Extension Master Gardeners may use this training program to count hours toward their annual certification requirement.
The cost of the workshop is $15 for the morning session on composting basics and $15 for the afternoon session on becoming a composting teacher or vermicomposting. Fees include attendance, refreshments, and all resource materials. Lunch is not included.
