A delegation of 38 Americans from the Wisconsin Rural Leadership Program (WRLP) recently returned from visiting and learning first-hand about leadership in Turkey. While in Turkey for 17 days the group was welcomed by several key leaders in many regions throughout the country. During their visits the participants studied the country's political, economic, historical, and cultural aspects.
While in Gaziantep the group was welcomed by the Governor, the Mayor, the President of the Chamber of Industry and the US Consulate of Adana. Gaziantep, a city of 1.1 million, located in southeastern Turkey has benefited from forward thinking local leaders. The WRLP participants learned how these leaders helped the city and the region prosper in an area of Turkey that has historically struggled.
On behalf of Governor Tommy Thompson, the WRLP presented a gift to the Governor of Gaziantep. Their Governor reciprocated by sending home a gift for WRLP to present to Governor Thompson.
After visits to various businesses in the GAP Project, WRLP members were invited to the homes of local leaders and treated to wonderful Turkish hospitality. In Istanbul, the group was welcomed to a personal audience with the Patriarch of the Eastern Orthodox Church. He shared his dream of peace for all people.
The Wisconsin Rural Leadership Program, University of Wisconsin-Extension, Madison, is a two year leadership development program that helps participants gain knowledge and understanding of issues in the State of Wisconsin, nationally, and internationally.
