Youth and adults invited to participate in 4-H communications training

Youth and adults who want to help others increase their

communications skills are encouraged to attend a communications workshop April 27 - 29 in Oshkosh. The workshop focuses on a new 4-H program called "Building Bridges - Reaching People Through Communication" and is for 4-H members, their parents, county agents and other 4-H volunteers, according to Trisha Day, a coauthor of the new project curriculum.

"Good communication is a bridge that connects people to other people," Day said, "Without it, it's difficult to build strong relationships, handle difficult situations, and respond successfully to opportunities and challenges."

The "Bridges" curriculum includes the resources and materials for a variety of communications projects such as public speaking, collecting and preserving oral history, creative writing, and reading for fun. The curriculum also includes activities, games, exercises and skits for learning about interpersonal communication skills, relationships, conflict resolution and public speaking.

The site for the workshop is Gruenhagen Conference Center, Oshkosh. Registration for the workshop is due April 10. The $55 workshop fee includes lodging, all meals and conference materials. Participants who do not need overnight accommodations may pay a commuter rate of $30.

Youth who can take a leadership role in implementing the program at the county level are encouraged to attend. Since there will not be a separate youth track, this will be an excellent opportunity for building youth and adult partnerships.
