Planting the right tree in the right place

Planting a new tree can be complicated by the location of power lines. A new guide for property owners shows how to plan your tree planting with power lines in mind. The University of Wisconsin-Extension Urban Agriculture/Horticulture Team, in partnership with Trees Forever, Alliant Energy and Madison Gas and Electric is pleased to announce the publication of "Power Planting: A Guide To Help You Choose The Right Tree in the Right Place."

Dr. Laura Jull, UW-Extension Woody Ornamental Specialist and author of the publication, said, "'Power Planting" is an excellent resource for avoiding problems at planting time and as your trees mature."

Trees near power lines can cause problems during the severe storms of summer and the ice and winds of winter. By planting low-growing trees under or near power lines, you can help prevent service problems in the future while beautifying your property. The full-color publication highlights the types of trees that can be planted near power lines, provides the basics of tree planting and care and covers special considerations to keep in mind with tree plantings, such as the location of utility meters and underground lines.

"Power Planting" is only available on the web site of the UW-Extension Urban Agriculture/ Horticulture Team at www.uwex.edu/ces/wihort . First, click on landscape, next click on trees and shrubs, and then click on the title of the publication, "Power Planting."
