Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) celebrates Earth Day, April 22, with five programs featuring environmental and biological topics, including water conservation and genetically altered crops.
WPT will broadcast:
- Although urban sprawl seems inevitable to some, the one-hour program, "Save Our Land, Save Our Town," which airs at 10 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, offers constructive suggestions on how people can save their cities, towns and countryside from a future filled with strip malls and subdivisions.
- A University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate student helps diffuse the decades-long conflict between environmentalists and crab fishermen in the Chesapeake Bay in the program, "Chesapeake Watermen: Between Heaven and Earth," airing at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 22.
- Wisconsin historically has had all the water it can use, and then some. However, what was once considered a bottomless resource may be nearing some limits. "Water Rich, Water Poor," airing at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, April 22, is a documentary noting some warning signs of water depletion.
- Everywhere on earth life exists in a great variety of fascinating and exquisite forms. This biological diversity encompasses the world's millions of living species and all the habitats in which they live. "Natural Connections," airing at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, explores the fragile, vital and natural connections of life on earth, from man to the smallest insect.
- In "Harvest of Fear," airing 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, Nova and Frontline join forces to explore the growing controversy over genetically modified agriculture. This special two-hour documentary presents both sides of the debate, exploring the potential benefits and hazards of this new technology.
WPT is a service of the Wisconsin Educational Communications Board and the University of Wisconsin-Extension.
