Journal for teen girls offers information on changes of puberty

Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) is distributing a Creating Health Girls Journal in bundles of 10 for $10.

The inviting and informative 54-page journal is an ideal project for groups like 4-H, Girls Scouts or even girls athletic teams.

"Adolescence can be a confusing whirlwind," said Lynne Blinkenberg, WPT's assistant director of outreach. "The Creating Health Girls Journal seeks to provide information about the emotional and physical changes that pre-teen and teen girls experience."

The journals also offer ample space for girls to simply write their thoughts, spurred on by comments on things like fashion models ("Fashion models. Are they real? Maybe they should eat something! What do you think?), exercise (Check out yoga, tai chi, pilates¿What do you think?) and menstruation (Everybody's periods are different. Some girls start when they're 9 or 10, some in their late teens. We could ask you some kind of question here, but we'd rather just let you write your biggest question about your period.).

The journal encourages girls to record their health history, as well as their families'. And, it includes helpful tips on nutrition, and skin and hair care.

Creating Health is a two-year WPT effort to help women monitor their health through their lifespan. The project includes a Web site, wpt.org/creatinghealth; women's health fairs; community discussion groups; a health planner and journal for women; and several television broadcasts.

To order the Creating Health Girls Journal, e-mail creatinghealth@wpt.org or call (800) 253-1158.

WPT is a service of the Wisconsin Educational Communications Board and the University of Wisconsin-Extension.
