http://www.wpt.org">Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) will air three programs in June about people of diversity in America. The programs highlight mayors, musicians, journalists, community activists and African-American choreographers. WPT will air:
Harold Washington: The Life and Times 10:30 p.m. Monday, June 4 looks at the first black to be elected mayor of Chicago. Although he is chiefly remembered for that office, Washington also served in the House of Representatives following a career as an attorney and state legislator. He de-racialized politics in Chicago by being strongly committed to racial and gender equity, which included giving more positions of power to women, Hispanics, and other diverse groups than any mayor before him.
The Fillmore, airing at 9:30 p.m. Monday, June 11, looks at the diverse history of San Francisco's celebrated Fillmore neighborhood and how it reflects the nation's social history. The program features a remarkable group of participants and storytellers who experienced the Fillmore as both the best and worst of 20th -century city life. It draws on an archive of photographs, film and music of the neighborhood to provide an entertaining tour of the people, places and events that helped forge the early identity of the Fillmore.
Chronicling the crucial role African-American dancers and choreographers have played in the development of modern dance as an American art form is Dance in America: Free to Dance, which airs at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 24. The series is a presentation of the American Dance Festival and the John. F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and documents how African-derived movement and European dance fused and made modern dance distinctively American.
WPT is a service of the Wisconsin Educational Communications Board and the University of Wisconsin-Extension.
