WPT's The Wisconsin Gardener features "Sex and Roses"

On the next edition of http://www.wpt.org/garden">The Wisconsin Gardener, airing at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 26 and encoring at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, July 29 on Wisconsin Public Television, producer/host Shelley Ryan and her guests discuss plant sex education, how to breed award-winning roses, the "Plant a Row for the Hungry" project and how to make a willow trellis. UW-Extension Plant Pathologist Brian Hudelson and Racine County Extension Specialist Patricia Nagai are among the guests.

Ryan visits Bill Radler, the former director of Boerner Botanical Gardens in Hales Corners. A rose breeder for years, Radler recently produced the award winning "Knockout" rose.

Knowing how plants reproduce can make the difference between success and failure in the garden. Racine County Extension Specialist Patricia Nagai tells viewers everything they ever wanted to know about the birds and bees of plant propagation.

Home gardeners often wonder where to go to get expert advice about their sick plants. UW-Extension Plant Pathologist Brian Hudelson joins Ryan for a lesson on how to package plant samples to send to the University of Wisconsin Plant Disease Diagnostics Clinic.

Janis Vandermeer, assistant vice president and coordinator for the Plant a Row for the Hungry program, discusses a national movement that calls for gardeners to plant an extra row for the hungry. A number of organizations, including Wisconsin Master Gardeners and the State Bank of Cross Plains, are actively working on this project. Find out how to get involved.

Susan Churchill, owner of Deertail Creek Willow Furniture, has been creating furniture out of willow for years, including arbors and towers. She'll show viewers how easy it is to make a willow trellis for their yard.
