Terrorism and Agriculture: A Look at Foot and Mouth Disease

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), farms and the food supply remain among the nation's most exposed targets for terrorism. Learn about the devastating impact Foot and Mouth Disease would have on our local, state and national economy and the emergency measures that you would have to undertake if Foot and Mouth Disease were detected in your community.

Guest speaker Dr. Gerald Ruch, D.V.M., Division of Animal Health, Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection will speak on these issues at two meetings on March 20.

From 10 a.m. to noon, Dr. Ruch will address farmers and veterinarians about the disease, the effects of last year's Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak in the UK, and what to do if Foot and Mouth Disease is suspected.

This workshop will be at the Kenosha County Center at Hwy 45 and 50 in Bristol.

In the afternoon, from 2 to 4 p.m., Dr. Ruch will speak to elected officials and first responders. The topics that will be included in the discussion will be an overview of Foot and Mouth Disease; The Wisconsin Emergency Plan; local quarantine responsibilities; and emergency biosecurity measures that would have to be implemented.
