Dairy Road Show offers dairy farmers a competitive edge

With presentations on modernization, breeding, milk quality and dairy economics, the University of Wisconsin-Extension Dairy Team's 2004 Road Show has topics of interest to almost everyone in the dairy business.

This year's Road Show, "Gaining the Competitive Edge - A Dairy Seminar Series," pulls out from UW-Madison for seven dates in January in locations around the state.

Seminars will be Jan. 6, Westby and Melrose; Jan. 7, Barron and Eau Claire; Jan. 8, Curtis and Stevens Point; Jan. 9, Marion and Kelly Lake; Jan. 13, Pine Bluff and Wisconsin Dells; Jan. 14, Kaukauna and Slovan; Jan. 15, Keil and Lomira.

The program will be the same at each location. Topics are:

â¿| "Transitioning in Steps: Costs of Modernization,' Brian Holmes and Dave Kammel, biological systems engineers; and Roger Palmer, Dairy Systems management specialist.

â¿| "Update and Evaluation of Various Breeding Programs," Paul Fricke, dairy cattle reproduction specialist; and Kent Weigle, animal science research specialist.

â¿| "Maximizing Profit by Producing Quality Milk," Pam Ruegg, milk quality specialist, and Mike Maroney, dairy science outreach specialist.

â¿| "Managing for Profits: The Full Package, " Bruce Jones, agricultural economist, and Roger Palmer, Dairy Systems Management Specialist.

â¿| "Increasing Profits from Your Feed Dollars," Randy Shaver, Dairy Nutrition Specialist, and Pat Hoffman, Dairy Herd Management Specialist.

Local agricultural agents also will present topics of interest to area dairy farmers. Each presentation will include time for questions from participants.

All meetings will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fee for the program, which includes lunch, is $20 per person and slightly less per person for additional attendees from the same farm.
