New Wisconsin Gardener cookbook makes great Mother's Day gift

A new cookbook based on the popular Wisconsin Public

Television (WPT) program The Wisconsin Gardener makes a great

Mother's Day gift and is available for online or mail orders.

"The Wisconsin Gardener Cookbook 2" features 69 recipes

submitted by lovers of wholesome and delicious Wisconsin-grown

produce. WPT solicited culinary creations through its Web site,

newspapers and the WPT Airwaves program guide. More than 200 people

sent in their family favorites for consideration. This cookbook

comes on the heels of the highly successful first edition that was

released in 2000.

Featured in the cookbook are tempting appetizers, sauces,

soups, salads, side dishes, main dishes, breads, muffins and

desserts. Chef Odessa Piper of Madison, nationally renown for her

commitment to organic, locally grown ingredients, contributed a

recipe for L'Etoile's Sweet and Hot Pepper Spoon Bread. Malcolm

Brett, WPT's station manager, proved that his talents go beyond

running a public broadcasting service since he offered a summer

pasta recipe. Shelley Ryan, producer/host of The Wisconsin

Gardener, highlights four of her favorite dishes, as well.

Writing in the cookbook's introduction, Ryan noted, "I

still love eating and cooking with fresh Wisconsin produce. I hope

you'll enjoy the recipes in this cookbook as much as I do."

A panel of judges -- including Tom Perry from the Green Bay

Press Gazette, who writes about food and cooks in an Italian

restaurant; Rafe Montello, an honor graduate from the Culinary

Institute of America; and Barbara Ingham, a food scientist with

University of Wisconsin-Extension and an Assistant Professor of

Food Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison -- had the

difficult job of selecting the eventual winning recipes to fill the

82-page cookbook.

The judges used the following criteria: recipes had to

include at least one Wisconsin-grown delectable bit of produce, had

to have easy-to-follow directions requiring less than an hour to

prepare and had to appeal to the general public.

The cookbook costs $5 and can be purchased at wpt.org/garden or by

mail. Those interested can write to The Wisconsin Gardener

Cookbook, 821 University Ave., Madison, WI 53706-1412. Please

include name, address, daytime phone and the number of cookbooks

ordered. Please enclose a check -- made out to TV Extras -- for $5

per cookbook, as well as, $1.50 for shipping 1-2 cookbooks, $2 for

3-4 cookbooks and $3 for 5 or more cookbooks.

Proceeds from the cookbook benefit programming on WPT.
