MADISON, Wis. - When you've been working all day and you just don't have the time or energy to cook, a fast food meal can be a fun family treat. But researchers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Harvard University have found that children tend to consume more calories when they eat fast food. Fast food meals were often high in fat and added sugars while lacking in milk, fruits and vegetables other than potatoes.

MADISON - Marcy shakes the box of Cheerios. Maybe there will be just enough for supper, she thinks to herself. She rummages around the top shelf of the cupboard, looking for the little yellow bowls. They are smaller than the white ones she'd used for breakfast, and yellow is such a cheerful color ... maybe if she uses those, the kids won't notice that there isn't as much cereal in them.

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin has been a leader in converting to high efficiency furnaces. According to staff of the Wisconsin's Focus on Energy program, 75 percent of the furnaces sold today are high efficiency models. A high efficiency model is defined as one that has an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency or AFUE of at least 90 percent. AFUE is a measure of the amount of the fuel that a furnace uses that is turned into useful heat.

MADISON, Wis. — The holidays can be a difficult time for many older adults, not only physically, but emotionally as well. If you feel a bit down and thinking back, you realize that you've felt that way throughout the holiday season, it's important to start the new year with a new outlook. Following a recent hearing about older adults and depression, Senator Larry Craig, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging made an appeal to those who are feeling down, especially older men, to seek help for depression.

On December 30, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a consumer alert on the safety of dietary supplements containing ephedra (also known as ephedrine alkaloids or Ma huang). These substances have been present in many products for dieters and athletes, but the FDA has found that their effectiveness tends to be short-lived and ephedra-containing products have an unreasonable risk of causing illness or injury.
