The Wisconsin weather in January may be icy and cold, but for intrepid gardeners there's always a plot of greenery somewhere, even if it's only to be found in the imagination.
Wisconsin Public Television (WPT), however, will offer some real greenery when for the first time it begins airing the popular The Wisconsin Gardener weekly, beginning on Sunday, Jan. 11. At 2 p.m. that Sunday, and each successive one, the garden program that offers growing advice specific to Wisconsin's climate will shift from a once-a-month airing to a weekly opportunity to pick up landscaping, pruning and growing tips.
Shelley Ryan, producer/host, also frequently visits the state's outstanding public and private gardens to offer inspiration and ideas. And, she visits Wisconsin chefs who know best how to cook with the bounty of the garden.
"I'm very pleased that we can now on a weekly basis bring the joy of America's No. 1 hobby - gardening - to appreciative viewers," Ryan said. "People can check out the Web site, wpt.org/garden, anytime, but this way, the television program is there to bring it all alive on a much more frequent basis."
The weekly run begins with "Spring Planning," which offers the essentials of spring preparation, including how to properly prune, start seeds indoors and lay out a garden. That airs at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11.
The following week, Sunday, Jan. 18, viewers can enjoy "Waiting for the Snow to Melt," which offers tips on forcing bulbs, care for garden tools, apple tree selection and insect control.
The month ends on Sunday, Jan. 25, with "Planning Ahead" about dwarf potted plants and seed sprouting indoors.
Episodes of The Wisconsin Gardener have enjoyed generous support over the years. Currently, funds are provided, in part, by Fiskars Inc. and the Wisconsin Landscape Contractors Association.
WPT is a service of the Educational Communications Board and the University of Wisconsin-Extension.
