Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle to proclaim "UW Spirit Week"

On Monday, May 3, Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle will kick off events celebrating the coming week as "University of Wisconsin Spirit Week."

UW Spirit Week, set for May 3-7, 2004, is an opportunity for alumni, students, members of UW System communities and Wisconsin citizens to celebrate campus allegiances and the many contributions the university makes to the state.

Alumni and friends of the university will join Doyle as he signs the proclamation at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 3, in the Governor's conference room at the Wisconsin State Capitol.

"This proclamation honors the talents and accomplishments of the half a million UW alumni who live and work in Wisconsin," Doyle said. "The university has a long and proud history in this state, and the continued work of the UW System means a bright future for Wisconsin."

"UW Spirit Day" set for Friday, May 7, will culminate the week-long celebration. Alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents and friends are invited to participate by wearing their home campus colors, logo wear, and/or a "spirit badge" to show their UW connection in schools, hospitals, banks, businesses and hometowns throughout Wisconsin.

University of Wisconsin-Extension officials hope that faculty, staff, clients and partners will use this opportunity to show their affiliation with the UW System's statewide outreach networks. This may include 4-H members, Master Gardeners, Wisconsin Public Television viewers, Wisconsin Public Radio listeners, Small Business Development Center clients, participants in Continuing Education classes, and many other UW-Extension stakeholders.

UW campus alumni associations have worked with Wisconsin businesses and civic organizations on "UW Spirit Day" activities, including local events to showcase community connections to the university.

More details and downloadable spirit badges are available through campus alumni associations or on the Web at http://www.wisconsin.edu/spirit .
