MADISON, Wis.-Hot weather and backyard grilling are hallmarks of the Labor Day holiday weekend. But before you head for the grill, make sure you go for the chill, says Barbara Ingham, University of Wisconsin-Extension food scientist.

MADISON, Wis. — The flavors of summer captured in sweet cucumber pickle slices, beet pickles and cantaloupe pickles. Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? But for people on a sugar-restricted diet, pickles and other foods may not be on the list of ‘approved foods.’ Thanks to efforts by The National Center for Home Food Preservation, located at the University of Georgia, recipes have been developed for No-Sugar Added Sweet Cucumber Pickle Slices, no-Sugar Added Pickled Beets, and No-Sugar Added Cantaloupe Pickles. Each of these recipes calls for Splenda¿, a relatively new artificial sweetener that is gaining in popularity.

Beginning on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 6, the popular BBC World News program will move from 11 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. every weekday. This earlier time will make the half-hour international news program more accessible to viewers as well as logically leading into the NewsHour With Jim Lehrer, which airs at 6 p.m. weekdays, and offers mainly national news.

Health care, the war in Iraq and jobs are topics on the minds of many likely voters. Republican candidates running for the U.S. Senate have formulated positions on these topics and others, and will lay them out in a statewide televised "We the People" Debate at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, on Wisconsin Public Television (WPT).

MADISON, Wis.-While many communities are interested in developing economic development strategies, few communities base those strategies on an assessment of the community's strengths and weaknesses. Andy Lewis, a Community Development Specialist for University of Wisconsin-Extension, argues that, "A community needs to examine its preparedness for economic development before implementing actions to improve jobs and income."
