Trees, Moss, Scuplture and Beetles Covered in Next "Wisconsin Gardener"

The Wisconsin Gardener will premiere a new edition of the popular program, titled “Great Gardens & Garden Greats,” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23.

Hosted and produced by Shelley Ryan, this episode will feature interesting plant selections and useful gardening tips.

The legacy of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum’s Ed Hasselkus is a wealth of disease-resistent and climate appropriate trees. From whitespire birch trees, prairiefire crabapple trees to redbud trees and rugosa roses, Hasselkus’s work lives through these hardy and beautiful trees. This segment celebrates him and his work.

While many gardeners combat moss in their yards, Janesville’s Rotary Gardens devote an entire garden to moss and ferns. Mark Dwyer of the gardens explains why moss can actually be desirable, and looks at some favorite ferns.

The beauty of concrete leaf sculptures is explored with David Calhoon of Swanstone Gardens, Green Bay. He shows how easy and enjoyable these works can be to create.

Multi-colored Asian Lady Beetles are a plague for many gardeners. University of Wisconsin-Extension Entomologist Phil Pellitteri explains how to identify the pests and how to keep them out of homes and yards.
