WPT FEBRUARY PROGRAMS HONOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY

Wisconsin Public Television's (WPT) February schedule features programs that honor the history and contributions of African-Americans.

* 11 p.m. Sunday, February 6, Independent Lens presents "February One: The Story of the Greensboro Four." In 1960 four college students staged a civil rights sit-in at a Greensboro, N.C. lunch counter. The program looks at what led them to protest and how it has affected their lives.

* 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, P.O.V.'s "Chisholm '72 Unbought & Unbossed" recaptures the time in American politics when Shirley Chisholm, an African-American woman, dared to take an equal place on the presidential dais.

* 8 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 9-16, the series Slavery and the Making of America presents new perspectives and facts about slavery chronicling the institution from its origins in 1619 through the arrival of the first 11 slaves in the northern colonies.

* 10:10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, P.O.V. "Wattstax," a documentary of the epochal 1972 concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, features a unique, unvarnished view of the Watts community with interviews interspersed with performances featuring Isaac Hayes, Richard Pryor and others.

* 11 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, Independent Lens "Strange Fruit" tells a dramatic story of America's past by using one of the most influential protest songs ever written as its epicenter. Viewers come face-to-face with the terror of lynching.

* 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, American Experience "Malcolm X: Make It Plain" is the portrait of a man who expressed the anger of African-Americans and their insistence on dignity and freedom. The program reflects the intellectual journey of a complex man whose ideas continue to resonate.

* 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, The Quiltmakers of Gee's Bend documents the modern lives and history of the African-American quiltmakers of Gee's Bend, Ala. For more than 150 years, the women have made quilts reflecting their world.
