WPT RECOGNIZES WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH WITH SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Throughout history, women have made myriad contributions to the vitality, richness and diversity of life. Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) celebrates these accomplishments during Women's History Month with special programs airing March 21 to 28.

At 8 p.m. Monday March 21, American Experience "The Pill" focuses on the birth control pill developed by two elderly female activists who demanded a contraceptive women could eat like aspirin.

Next at 9 p.m., P.O.V. "Chisholm '72 Unbought & Unbossed" follows the story of the late Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to Congress and the first black woman to run for president. Immediately following at 10:30 p.m., American Masters "Joni Mitchell: Woman of Heart and Mind" profiles this fiercely independent woman who resisted the whims of mainstream audiences and the male-dominated recording industry to bravely explore territory outside of accepted pop music.

At 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo examines the life the 20th-century icon who became an international sensation in the worlds of modern art and radical politics.

At 10 p.m. Sunday, March 27, Masterpiece Theatre "Bertie & Elizabeth" charts one of the most enchanting and successful marriages in the annals of royal relationships. Elizabeth I, the late "Queen Mum," was the most enduringly popular member of the royal family until her death in March of 2002.

At 8 p.m. Monday, March 28, American Experience "Emma Goldman" paints a portrait of the young, brilliant Russian emigrant, called the most dangerous woman in America, who was expelled from the United States 34 years after she arrived.
