Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) will provide a tape-delayed broadcast of excerpts from Wisconsin's 28th-annual ceremony at the capitol rotunda honoring late civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21.
Viewers who receive digital channels can watch a live broadcast of the ceremony at noon on WPT's The Wisconsin Channel. The program also will be streamed and archived at wpt.org on the Web.
The event is hosted by Wisconsin Public Radio's (WPR) Jonathan Overby and will include the presentation by Gov. Jim Doyle of Wisconsin’s Martin Luther King Heritage Award to Fern Yangyeitie Caulker, guest speaker Gloria J. Ladson-Billings and Clarence Garrett, the
oldest graduate in the history of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. The award honors individuals whose commitment to serving others mirrors the life of Dr. King. The annual National Lifetime Achievement Award will recognize legendary soul singer Jerry "The Ice Man" Butler.
University of Wisconsin-Extension Chancellor David Wilson also will participate in the ceremony and The Wisconsin Masons of York Rite Freemasonry, Zor Shriners, will serve as the tribute's Honor Guard.
The celebration also will feature performances by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Gospel Choir, gospel singer Tamara Smith, trumpeters John Georgeson and Don Navis, the Ton Ko-Thi Children’s Performing Ensemble, Chicago’s Complete Praise Mime Troupe and the Sun Prairie High School Jazz Ensemble.
