WPT's "In Wisconsin" Report on National Guard Major's Adoption of Iraqi Orphan
This week, In Wisconsin on Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) reports on the adoption of an Iraqi orphan by a member of the Wisconsin National Guard, the return of the American Bald Eagle and a well-known Wisconsin educator.
The newsmagazine airs at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 3. The program also airs at noon on Sunday, April 6 on WPT and at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, April 6 on WMVS-TV in Milwaukee.
Scott Southworth, a Major in the Wisconsin National Guard, fell in love with and adopted a young Iraqi orphan boy while commanding of a military police unit in Baghdad. The little boy now lives with his adoptive dad in Juneau County where Southworth is the district attorney.
The American Bald Eagle has made a spectacular comeback in our state. One of the best times and places to view this amazing bird is in winter, just below the dam on the Wisconsin River in Prairie du Sac. A video essay captures the Sauk Prairie eagles in winter.
A well-known Wisconsin high school educator died last weekend. Milton McPike was principal at Madison East High School from 1979–2002. Two years later, McPike was appointed as a member of the University of Wisconsin’s Board of Regents.
While principal at Madison East, the school was named as a National High School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education, and in 1990, Reader's Digest named McPike a National Hero in Education. In Wisconsin features a profile of McPike that first aired in 1990 on the WPT program, American Journey.
This program's video postcard features a spring day at the Horicon National Wildlfe Refuge.
Funding for In Wisconsin is provided, in part, by Alliant Energy, UW–Health/UW Paul P. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center and Animal Dental Center of Milwaukee and Oshkosh.
WPT is a service of the Educational Communications Board and University of Wisconsin-Extension.
