IDEAS for a better Wisconsin
Since joining the University of Wisconsin Colleges and University of Wisconsin-Extension in May, I have traveled the state extensively to meet with students, partners, clients and stakeholders. In these conversations, I've used a simple word Ð IDEAS Ð to convey my top-priority issues: Innovation, Diversity, Economic Development, Access and Stewardship.
UW-Extension has a long history of innovation, bringing cutting-edge research from the university laboratory to homes, factories, businesses and farms across the state. Today, our campus-community networks continue to facilitate that transfer of innovative technology in ways that stimulate economic growth and improve our quality of life. I am especially encouraging the UW Colleges and UW-Extension to work jointly to deliver innovative new programs.

Similarly, UW-Extension draws upon evidence-based research to address emerging social issues. As the diversity of Wisconsin's population continues to increase, UW-Extension is working to educate and serve residents from all walks of life. These efforts not only create a more inclusive, welcoming environment for new residents, but also help Wisconsin remain economically viable and globally competitive.
In turn, this contributes to the state's overall economic development. Although the university is rightly viewed as a primary source of educated workers, UW-Extension also stimulates demand for those workers. UW-Extension supports growing businesses by providing one-on-one counseling to entrepreneurs and unbiased advice to farmers and agribusiness owners. In addition, county- and campus-based educators contribute to stronger families, healthier children and more vibrant communities.
Positioning Wisconsin for long-term growth and success requires that we provide broad access to all of the public university's resources. UW-Extension's mission is to provide access to university resources and opportunities for lifelong learning, wherever people live and work. That is possible through a unique combination of county offices, public broadcasting networks, Internet-based resources and other innovative delivery methods. The UW Colleges is also a key provider of access to higher education through its campuses and online offerings.
Our success in these areas is a direct result of peoples' trust in the UW name. Preserving that trust requires that we be vigilant in our stewardship of local, state and federal tax dollars, as well as the many gifts and grants that support our work. We must work every day to show a tangible, positive return on investment from our institutions of higher education.
