    Autumn 1997 (September through November) was characterized by mild temperatures and below-normal precipitation.  Temperatures across the state were about a degree below normal for the season.  The statewide precipitation total was 2.71 inches below normal for autumn.  The driest conditions were across southern and central Wisconsin, which received only 47-58% of normal precipitation.
